The McKay name has been part of Pacific Northwest business since 1954, when Harlan C. McKay founded the Harlan McKay Company as a manufacturer's representative for the construction and mining industry. Built on prompt, courteous service, the company quickly earned a reputation across the Northwest.

On the other side of the family, Roy Nelson, David's maternal grandfather, was a contractor in Dallas, Oregon, where a young David first learned the trade, working summers as a laborer before entering construction full time in 1978. Both grandfathers left a lasting mark on what HMK Company would become: Harlan's business discipline and Roy's hands-on construction experience.

Second generation: Harlan's son, David McKay, joined the business after completing his studies at Willamette University, covering the Oregon territory and carrying the McKay legacy into its second generation.

Third generation: David McKay's son, the younger David McKay, began working full time in construction in 1978, drawing on the influence of both grandfathers. Over the following decades, his career evolved into construction program management, building more than 45 years of industry experience and 25 years as an Owners Project Manager.

In 2013, David and Karen McKay founded HMK Company to focus exclusively on public construction program management. Fourth generation: Today, three of David and Karen McKay's children — Chris, Anna, and Stephen McKay — carry that legacy forward, helping lead HMK's work across Oregon.

The values that built Harlan's reputation are the same values that guide our work today: accountability, transparency, and treating every dollar as a trust. We review every change order with a builder's eye, keep our clients informed at every stage, and measure success not by the size of the program, but by the lasting impact it has on a community. Four generations later, the commitment remains the same: earn trust through results, not promises.
